Preparation
Proper preparation of the wood surface is crucial for optimal application of Osmo Polyx Oil:
- Surface Condition: Ensure the wood is clean, dry, and frost-free.
- Ready to Use: Osmo Polyx Oil is ready to use, so all you need to do is stir well before use.
- Cleaning: Thoroughly clean the wood before application. You should remove old paints and lacquers to ensure optimal application and durability.
- Sanding: Sand carefully, starting with coarse sandpaper with the final grade being 120-150 grit for flooring, or 180-240 grit for furniture. Remove dust with a broom or vacuum after sanding.
- Patch Test: It’s always best to do a patch test application before starting the job. You want to ensure that the oil will have the desired effect.
Application
Osmo Polyx Oil can be used on various surfaces, including all wooden, cork, and certain stone surfaces like terracotta and unglazed tiles. For optimal results, follow these application tips:
- Tool Selection: Apply the oil using a high-quality brush or a lint-free cloth. We recommend using the Osmo Floor Brush, a Synthetic Paint Brush, or a Microfibre Roller.
- Even Application: Ensure the oil is applied evenly and any excess is removed with a cloth.
- Primer for Specific Woods: For tropical, oily, or dense woods, use Osmo Wood Wax Finish Extra Thin as a primer.
- Primer for areas prone to moisture: Osmo Wood Protector 4006 can be used as a preservative primer underneath the Polyx Oil where moisture may pose an issue.
- Apply Thinly: Apply the oil thinly along the wood grain and spread well.
- Drying Time: Allow to dry for approximately 8-10 hours in a well-ventilated area.
- Second Coat: After the initial drying, apply a second thin coat. The surface will be usable after approx. 8-10 hours, and fully cured after 2-3 weeks.
- Recoating: One coat on the clean and dry surface is usually sufficient when renovating or recoating an already oiled surface.
