Vandyke Crystals are used in the making a natural traditional water based wood stain.

Made from crushed Walnut Husks, dissolved in water to produce a brown wood stain, commonly known as Vandyke brown the traditional stain for colouring oak, mahogany and walnut.

Vandyke Crystals dissolve in hot water to achieve a brown colour, the intensity of which is controlled by the strength of the solution. Vandyke Crystals makes one of the most versatile stains available. The stain does not need to be hot when applied, also suitable for staining softwood and other types of hard woods.

Preparation

Dissolve the crystals in hot water (approx. 100g of crystals to 1L or water).
Test the colour on a test piece of wood, darken by adding more crystals and lighten by adding more water.

Application

Ensure the surface is clean, bare, dry and free from dust. Apply with a brush or sponge and wipe of any excess with a cloth.
Allow to dry for at least 12 hours, then rub down lightly with abrasive paper 240 or 320 grit before appliying a finish.

Once applied and dry, the intensity of the colour can still be adjusted by a wipe over with a damp cloth, a useful technique for creating shading effects.

I was a bit sceptical as this now appears to be sold as a powder, not a crystal form as the title would suggest, however i actually find it easier to use as it's slightly quicker at diluting, and it does still give the same finish.
Still a recommended product!
