Preparation
Thorough preparation of the surface is crucial for optimal application of Osmo Top Oil:
- Ensure Cleanliness and Dryness: The wood surface must be clean, dry, and frost-free with a moisture content not exceeding 18%.
- Product Preparation: Osmo Top Oil is ready to use, so you only need to stir the oil well before use to ensure consistency.
- Remove Old Finishes: Thoroughly clean old microporous stains. Completely remove all old paints and lacquers.
- Fill Imperfections: Use Osmo Wood Filler to fill small cracks, larger joints, or holes in the wood to create a smooth, even surface.
- Sanding: Carefully sand the wood surfaces, starting with coarse sandpaper and progressing to finer grades. 150 grit is recommended as the finest grade for worktops. We recommend using a dust mask during sanding to avoid irritation by inhaling particles.
- Dust Removal: Before applying the oil, remove all sanding dust with a soft brush or vacuum cleaner to ensure a clean surface for better adhesion.
- Primer for Specific Woods: For darker and richer woods, it is recommended to use Osmo Wood Wax Finish Clear Extra Thin to protect the wood better.
- Primer for areas prone to moisture: Osmo Wood Protector 4006 can be used as a preservative primer underneath the Polyx Oil where moisture may pose an issue.
Osmo Wood Protector 4006 is also highly recommended for use on new Oak or Beech Worktops.
- Patch Test: Since the final appearance of the surface can be influenced by various factors, including the wood’s condition, a patch test application is necessary, particularly for unfamiliar or unique surfaces.
